Home Repair Programs get Increase for Seniors, Families in Need

The amount of funding available to Islanders for grants through home repair programs is increasing.

The 2021-22 provincial budget includes a $678,000 investment for incremental increases to the following programs over a three-year period:

  • eligible grant amount for Seniors Safe at Home will increase from $5,000 to $10,000;
  • eligible amount for the Seniors Home Repair program will increase from $2,000 to $4,000;
  • PEI Home Repair Program funding for seniors and families in need will increase from $6,000 to $12,000; and
  • PEI Home Repair Program funding for people with disabilities will increase from $8,000 to $16,000.

This new investment brings the total annual budget for the programs to $2.7M.

“These programs not only help to maintain the homes of low-income Islanders, but also improve household energy efficiency and assist our seniors to age in place,” says Minister of Social Development and Housing, Brad Trivers. “We are continuously reviewing our programs to see how we can best support the well-being of Islanders and help seniors age well in their homes and stay in their communities.”

The incremental increase will take place over the next few months and help Islanders make changes to their home to improve its accessibility, safety, structure, heating, plumbing, and electrical systems to improve energy efficiency.
